The African Studies Centre in the School of Interdisciplinary Area Studies seeks applications from candidates for a fixed-term postdoctoral position, to work on the ERC-funded project ‘Comparing the Copperbelt: Political Culture and Knowledge Production in Central Africa’ for 21 months from 1st October 2018. The appointee will work as part of a larger team of postdoctoral researchers reporting to the Principal Investigator, Professor Miles Larmer.
The postdoctoral researcher will address the aims of this research project by conducting research (both fieldwork and archival) on the social history of mining communities in the Haut Katanga region of the Democratic Republic of Congo. They will present their research findings in appropriate forums including international academic conferences and workshops organised within the auspices of the project itself as well as writing up the findings of the research in both single-authored and co-authored publications.
You will have a doctorate in a relevant field, or evidence that a doctorate is imminently expected; excellent knowledge of relevant research languages and the ability to produce single-authored publications that reflect both the subject and methodologies of the project. You will also demonstrate an ability to work as part of a team while conducting autonomous academic research; including developing knowledge of the wider historical context of the Central African Copperbelt and mining history in the mid-to-late twentieth century with only light supervision.
The post is based at the School of Interdisciplinary Area Studies, Bevington Road, Oxford.
